Travelers are "feeling spooked" by the ongoing outbreak of coronavirus in countries around the world, with many cancelling or postponing what they plan to do in a destination.
Tours and activities booking site GetYourGuide says calls to its call center have tripled and its global cancelation rate has increased by 20% over normal levels.
This comes on the back of an overall 50% drop in bookings over the past two weeks.
The gloomy business outcome of the spread of the virus to more than 100 countries around the world, including some of Europe's big tourist hotspots such as Italy, which is now on lockdown, has ignited a "stay local" trend in bookings.
Data from the company indicates travelers are turning to booking activities that are closer to home and do not require a flight.
The share of bookings made by travelers in their home markets has increased by 7%, particularly by Spanish, U.S. and Australian travelers, it says.
Travelers are also biding their time before making a booking, with "spontaneous" decisions being made within three days of an activity's start time increasing by 15%.
The rapid pace in which the virus is spreading to new countries is indicated by earlier data from GetYourGuide just a week ago (March 4) that showed global bookings were down by 25%.
GetYourGuide says it is offering a full refund to customers who cancel a booking more than 24 hours in advance.
