Heathrow Airport is taking passenger transit to the next level with the full release of its driverless transport pods.
The British Airports Authority describes the pods as the first new example of transit technology in 100 years.
The 21 battery-powered pods were developed by UK company Ultra PRT and BAA based on a project started by Bristol University.
They cost £30 million to develop, have been in testing since April and have already carried 10o,ooo passengers.
BAA estimates they will carry 500,000 passengers between Terminal 5 and the business car park each year.
A few green facts about the pods:
- Run on low-energy batteries
- Have zero emissions
- Will eliminate 50,000 bus journeys each year
Pods can carry four passengers with luggage and will be situated at stations according to demand.
